9th edition’s Narrative Play overhaul and the addition of Crusadeis one of my favorite things about it, finally giving us a narrative framework for army and character progression that feels like more than an afterthought. So I was excited to see that White Dwarf was taking the plunge into new narrative content. Long-time Goonhammer readers will know that I’m a glutton (read: sucker) for narrative and campaign content, always looking to find new hooks and interesting ideas to add to my own campaigns. They’ve split the campaign into three phases or parts, with plans to cover each phase separately across White Dwarf issues 457, 458, and 459. In this first article they cover the Argovon System, a key system within the Pariah Nexus, and the battle to claim it, with factions from all corners of the galaxy attempting to conquer the region. Based on this initial entry, they seem like an interesting way for Games Workshop to create interesting narrative rules without releasing full supplements, and a good fit for White Dwarf in terms of creating interesting content for players. However, whether we will see more expansions or whether HBS will go straight into a sequel is another matter.White Dwarf 457 is out and it introduces a new ongoing series called Flashpoints, which explore specific warzones and regions within the 40k universe, with new backstory and rules. It was therefore never in doubt that BattleTech would continue, and with the release of the first Battletech expansion it’s certain there will be more. This not only suggests the game did well but also that the studios could have had a good working relationship. Paradox Interactive bought Harebrained Schemes back in June, shortly after shipping BattleTech with them. ![]() Flashpoints will also introduce what Harebrained Schemes is calling “Consecutive Deployments,” where players are forced to continue the fight and left unable to repair their Mechs between missions. These sections include choices to make, surprising events to deal with, conversations to have, and rewards to be gained. These are branching short stories comprised of special procedural ground mercenary missions with special scenes set from the crew of your spaceship. ![]() ![]() The biggest part of the new BattleTech expansion, however, are the Flashpoints that give the DLC its name. These include the popular Hatchetman with “armor-chopping power,” the nimble and versatile Crab, and the Cyclops with “multi-range firepower.” There’s a new tropical beach biome to add a bit of extra variety to locations, and a new multiplayer Encounter called “Target Acquisition,” where players have to capture and control three territories on a map to win. The most important part of the DLC is the three new Mech types joining the game from the tabletop universe (the same setting as MechWarrior). The Flashpoint BattleTech expansion will add a number of new features to the game, including new stories and new Mechs. The first Battletech expansion DLC will be called Flashpointand it has a release date of November 2018. Paradox Interactive has announced the first proper DLC expansion for BattleTech, the turn-based Mech strategy game from Shadowrun developer Harebrained Schemes set in the BattleTech tabletop universe.
